Rehabilitation jeopardised by planned media application

In a letter published in today's Guardian, the chief executives of several major children's and human rights organisations have joined CRAE's national co-ordinator in calling for reporting restrictions to be maintained to protect the identity of the two young boys who have admitted attacking two children in Edlington in April last year. The defendants, now aged 11 and 12, pleaded guilty to the grave attacks and are expected to be sentenced tomorrow. They are then likely to face an application from media organisations for their identities to be made public.
Final push in Parliament for children's rights before the 2010 General Election

The Children’s Rights Alliance for England is gearing up for its last Parliamentary push before the General Election on securing children’s rights in the Equality Bill, which enters Committee in the House of Lords next week (11 January). Working with other members of the Young Equals campaign, we lobbied Ministers, civil servants and Parliamentarians throughout 2009 to ensure protection from age discrimination will apply to under 18s as well as to adults. We also want schools and children’s homes to be fully included in equality duties, and the Government to give full consideration to children’s experiences of age discrimination in the guidance it plans to issue once the legislation has been passed.
Information Commissioner directs YJB to disclose restraint manual following CRAE complaint

The Information Commissioner has upheld CRAE's complaint about the Youth Justice Board's refusal to disclose the Physical Control in Care restraint manual, used in secure training centres. On 10 December, the Commissioner issued a Decision Notice indicating that it agrees with CRAE that disclosure is in the public interest, and requiring the Youth Justice Board to disclose the manual to us within 35 days.

Today represents a momentous landmark in the children’s rights calendar, being as it is 20 years to the day that the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. To mark the occasion, our State of children’s rights in England report is launched.
