Exemption clauses that threaten children’s rights dropped

We are very pleased that the Government finally agreed to drop the exemption clauses from children’s social care legislation from the Children and Social Work Bill after the Shadow Labour Minister tabled amendments to scrap them. The Government was defeated in the House of Lords on these last year and had made some concessions in response but the clauses were still very concerning for children’s rights. We supported the “Together for Children” campaign made up of 53 organisations and 160 individual experts who campaigned heavily to stop these getting through.

The Bill received Royal Assent in April 2017. You can read more about how the clauses were defeated here.
